Blue Cross Blue Shield of Alabama Endowed Chair in Health Economics

The Department of Health Care Organization and Policy, School of Public Health, University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) is inviting applications for the newly established Blue Cross Blue Shield of Alabama Endowed Chair in Health Economics. This is a 12-month, full-time faculty position at the Associate or Full Professor rank, tenured or tenure earning. Candidates should have a doctoral degree in Economics, Policy, Health Services Research or a related field and a strong record of scholarly work. The successful candidate will be expected to mount an independent and externally funded research program with primary focus on health economics, health policy, and health services research with emphasis on health challenges pertinent to the population of Alabama; such as access to primary health care, rural health, health insurance coverage, and related topics. While the primary role of the Endowed Chair will be research, the successful candidate will also be expected to foster interdisciplinary collaborations, teach graduate courses in areas of expertise, and participate in service activities in the School, University and broader community.

The UAB School of Public Health, accredited through the Council on Education for Public Health, has more than $39 million in active grant research and five academic departments. The school is also home to a number of public health practice-oriented centers including the Center for the Study of Community Health, Deep South Center for Occupational Health & Safety, Lister Hill Center for Health Policy, Sparkman Center for Global Health, Alabama-Mississippi Public Health Training Center, and Preparedness and Emergency Response Learning Center. The five departments within the SOPH offer training in more than 20 major specialty areas and engage in numerous interdisciplinary training programs with the Graduate School and the various health professional schools at UAB.

The Department of Health Care Organization and Policy conducts research as well as providing training and education at the undergraduate, master and doctoral level. The undergraduate degree is a general B.S. degree in Public Health offered through the School of Public Health. Departmental Master of Public Health (MPH) degrees are offered in health policy, health care organization, maternal and child health policy and leadership, as well as coordinated degree options in business, optometry, public administration, nursing, social work, and juris doctorate. The department also offers a Master of Science in Public Health (MSPH) in outcomes research. The department’s Doctor of Public Health (DrPH) degree has concentrations in Public Health Management, Maternal and Child Health Policy, and Outcomes Research.
